Civic Address Data Base

The civic address database is a file containing civic addresses with geo-referenced coordinates for properties within New Brunswick. Note that not all properties have a valid civic address. This data is the result of ongoing quality assurance efforts and as such is considered a best efforts dataset.

Reliance on this data for emergency response purposes or mission critical application is not recommended. Data for emergency response should be acquired from New Brunswick Department of Public Safety, 911 Branch email: NB9-1-1@gnb.ca

Service New Brunswick is posting this “Best Efforts” data to assist users of Geographic Information Systems and Web Mapping in the assembly of geo-referenced land information. As “Best Efforts” data, the addresses may contain errors or omissions in any given field. The coordinates supplied would, in most cases, fall within close proximity to the center of the associated property.

The file that is downloaded is approximately 10 MB zipped and contains 9 text files in tab delimited format:

  • Locations.txt: the civic address database with approximately 500,000 records, in tab delimited format
  • Coordinate_classes.txt: code table for coordinate class
  • Coordinate_methods.txt: code table for method of collecting coordinates
  • Coordinate_sources.txt: code table for source of coordinates
  • Counties.txt: code table for county names
  • Place_names.txt: code table for place names
  • Street_directions.txt: code table for street direction

Using the Civic Address Data Base

The Locations table has too many fields to be opened in Microsoft Excel. Relational database software (i.e. Microsoft Access or MySQL) will be required to open the file.

If you are using Microsoft Access please note that to correctly view the French characters you will have to change the Code Page to Unicode (UTF-7) when you are importing into Access.

Below is a diagram displaying the relationships between the Locations table and the eight code tables.
