Vital Statistics

Introduction

The Vital Statistics Branch has three main functions:

  • the collection, storage, maintenance, and retrieval of vital events data (births, deaths, stillbirths, and marriages);
  • the synthesis and analysis of vital events data; and,
  • the provision of vital events documents for personal use (birth certificates, marriage licenses, death certificates).

In support of these functions, the Vital Statistics branch also approves and registers requests for a name change, recognizes churches/religious denominations to marry, and produces a variety of health-related statistical reports based on vital event registration.
